In the last war,

in the least of the Malay States, Brunei, the

handful of the European community voluntarily imposed

on themselves an income tax for presentation to

H.M.G. for the prosecution of the war, which realised

a sum of £285, and I have no doubt they were very

proud of it.

Sir Shenton Thomas in his recent personal

letter to the Secretary of State with regard to an

improvement of the B.B.C. programmes included a

sentence as follows, which I believe to be no less

important for conson. in the present connection: -

"All the Empire wants is to feel that it is really a living part of the mother country, to have a share in her life: we ought not to be kept aloof as we are."
